Nine shows by artists under 30 have landed at Mittelyoung 2024: two of music, two of theatre, two of dance and three of circus, bringing young artists from Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Serbia and Switzerland to Cividale del Friuli, after an open call that saw two hundred and fifty applications from all over Europe. The under-30 curatores who selected the nine shows will announce the three winners who will perform again at Mittelfest on July 20, 21 and 22.

What’s new in 2024 is a jury of experts, who are called upon to evaluate and showcase the best and most interesting proposals among those nine. The jurors for 2024 are three experienced professionals such as Alberto Bevilacqua, Veronika Brvar and Roberto Canziani.

A concert combining music, circus and theatre, video mapping, choreography and fashion design. Energy and calm, harmony and disorder, passion and technicality. Marquis Noir are an eclectic fusion of extremes, in which the freedom of improvisation and the adrenaline of rock combine with classical music, film music and funk. As the five musicians write, “music is universal, but musical fusion is even more so”. A Marquis Noir concert means either calm in the chaos of the universe or chaos in the stillness of life.

In 2014, twenty-two-year-old Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured fourteen. Before committing suicide, he released his manifesto, “My Twisted World”, which collected the significant events of his life, from childhood to the massacre. Elliot was a so-called “incel”, an involuntary celibate. In Twisted World, Elliot’s mind is transformed into an interactive stage video game. An unconventional show that confronts us with the most extreme contemporary generational fears.

We all sin in the eyes of God. But what happens when a sin is so great that it cannot be forgiven? There are those who repent, those who question themselves, those who choose to improve themselves. The characters in this play are two brothers who fight, endlessly and over the most trivial things. Where will this fight take them? Only if you are aware of the problem you are in, can you hope for redemption: this is the essence of “Lonesome Balkans”. Add to that a healthy dose of black humour.

A 1980s disco diva and a sanctified queen emerge from a pile of laundry and invite us into their bizarre living room. Two innocent, hairy, sacred characters with a passion for drama, born in the wrong era and lost in their own imperfection, plunge us into a dreamy MTV show, that has the energy of the dance floor and the glamour of David Bowie. With the motto “Life is a Mystery”, Santa & Glitter transports us into a divine universe that combines vertical rope, dance trapeze, hair suspension and physical theatre.

An ironic user manual for contemporary masculinity, with political and surreal elements, on the border between ritual and eroticism, freedom and constraint, a dressing room and a dark room.

Two elderly people are addicted to watching everything that television throws at them. This rectangular box affects the couple’s beliefs to such an extent that it becomes a projection of their own lives. It is only by switching it off that the power of dreams will return to authenticity. Their cheeks regain colour, their eyes vitality, their movements become agile again. Son tutte palle (That’s a load of balls!) is a wordless show that, combining juggling, clowning and acrobatics, recounts the aches and pains of old age and the deceptions of television with irony and delicacy.

Aggressive sounds and meditative moments, rock and traditional music: the style of the trio De Origine is elusive, rooted in minimalism, electronics, and ventures into a refined and courageous exploration of timbre and melody.
